Who is Nellie?
Nellie is the new, modern approach to adult social care in the UK. We specialise in adult social care assessments, brokerage services and mental wellbeing.
Nathan lived in Manchester with his wife and 2 children, his brother Robert in Spain. Nathan’s mother and father both lived in the family home in Peterborough. After Nathan’s father passed away his mother Janette began to lose her sight due to macular degeneration and suffered several falls at home.
Nathan contacted his local authority for assistance. He discovered there was a considerable waiting list. His mother was seen as a low priority need as she was above the financial threshold; she would be “self-funding” her care. She would also she need to pay a “brokerage fee” of £450.00 for any care the local authority organised.
Nathan contacted Nellie Supports, asking for an Assessment of Needs and Brokerage of Care Plan. Although Nathan initially requested a weekend appointment, he changed this to a weekday evening appointment as his brother was flying in to spend time with his mother and wanted to be involved.
Our Social Care Consultant attended Janette’s home. After gaining consent from her for the Needs Assessment to take place. We completed a full needs assessment, identifying Janette’s strengths, for example, she had some valued friends in the neighbourhood and had attended several local groups until her sight had deteriorated.
The Needs Assessment identified Janette could be supported with carers attending to her, not for personal care, but to support her in accessing the community reducing her social isolation and improving her mood.
Whilst Nathan and Johnathan didn’t live closely they agreed to call their mother once a week and organise an online shop to ensure she had everything she needed and didn’t need to worry about the weekly shop.
Our Social Care Consultant organised a ‘Falls Detector’ that would send an SMS alert to both sons and a neighbour should Janette suffer another fall.
They also organised for the installation of a ‘Google Home Device’ to allow the family to book appointments into Janette’s Google Calendar and to support Janette in remembering to take the small amount of medication she needed each day.
Janette also requested our Keyworker Service, to “take the pressure” off of her sons and to ensure she had a regular contact should her needs change and to keep her sons up-to-date on the weeks they couldn’t be there.
